What Can I Speed Read?
Speed reading is the best
way to read, but only if you're reading for informational purposes.
If you are
familiar with the vocabulary of the text, you can speed read just about
anything without difficulty and without compromise, as long as that text is
written for informational purposes.
Problems occur if you try
to speed read poems, short stories, or novels heavy with auditory devices
such as rhyming, alliteration, or assonance. Speed reading works by reading
visually, and eliminating all auditory information from the words
themselves. If you speed read a poem, you will
probably miss the beauty, and just get the info from it.
Speed reading actually increases comprehension levels. Focus, concentration, and the differences between the regular reading processes and the speed reading process, all play a part in why speed reading makes text easier to comprehend.

If reading didn't take
you so long, you would read more, and that would definitely help
you. You would be able to include more sources in your reading list,
you would be more informed, you would perform better in whatever it
is you do, and you would become more productive overall.
