Urinary Tract Infection
usually occurs when bacteria enter the opening of the urethra and
multiply in the urinary tract. The urinary tract includes the two kidneys,
ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), the
bladder itself, and the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the
bladder to the urethral opening).
Any part of the urinary
tract can become infected: the urethra, the bladder (infection is called
cystitis), the ureters or the kidneys. Bladder infections are common and
relatively easily treated, whereas infections that involve the kidneys are
less common but more serious.
Women are more
prone to UTI's, probably because they have shorter urethras which therefore
pass bacteria into the urinary tract more easily.
90% of all infections are caused by e.coli bacteria that have invaded the
urinary tract, usually from the gut.
